PVPUSD students are exposed to a wide range of learning opportunities beyond the traditional classroom through clubs, volunteering and extra-curricular activities. Surfboard shaping at Palos Verdes High School is one example.
Through the collaborative efforts of Art Teacher Joe Pinkleman and the Gherardi Family, the club was established in 2012.
Approximately 20 – 25 students are involved each year which meets during the spring semester at lunch two days a week, on Mondays and Fridays. Over the course of 10 weeks, students learn how to design and shape a surfboard. Mr. Pinkleman along with Teacher Adam Hamler and Associate Principal Jeremy Meadows teach students how to take measurements, use a variety tools and follow the necessary safety precautions for fabrication.
Some students have designed multiple surfboards during their time at PVHS while others who have never ridden a surfboard also participate.
