looks like you guys are saying I rushed over from Norwalk today but I'm just really excited about the opportunity like you said to serve the school that I graduated from a 1998 one side left I went to UC Berkeley where I got bit in mm to go Bears I'm working Oakland for 2 years in the school districts I'm just kind of doing outside work so through the through nonprofits and then came back down to Pepperdine work on my Master's a credential which brought me back down south where I started my work at Leuzinger High School there's your family I just turned four today so happy yeah so like you said the doctor to USA and I've been serving for the last 6 years in Norwalk High School but I'm just be excited to come back to Peninsula and I feel like throughout my career and every position I've taken and every role that I've had my goal has always been to better myself so that I can help support anyone that I work for my goal is always to support and help and guide in any way that I can. how to use my personal professional and educational experiences to do that and one big reason that I'm excited to return to peninsulas that we live in Torrance and to be able to include my family in my work life going to be really fun for me to be able to bring my boys to Athletics her performances are there what is going on on campus is going to be really a special time in our lives so thank you for this opportunity and go Panthers and that includes room okay great thank you so much thank you and welcome to your new rolls into our district and we love when when our administrators and teachers bring their kids out to events so definitely do that as much as you can. trying to spread his boys this weekend to see some robotics things and it was it was great to see it through their eyes as well as to see the high school kids explaining to you know little ones healthy I loved it it was great thank you movie onto the consent calendar which includes what we just talked about among other things go ahead I'll to be is a designation of CIF representative right now I don't have a problem to you I just want to make sure that we are following closely the CIF guidelines when it comes to athletes uniforms and other laws associated with Aquatics in the CI at Tallahassee AMC do you want to make a motion for that item in but I would like to I move that we approve I hope to be out Jason of 2019-20 destination of California Federation representative as well okay thank you moving on to numbers are off here okay here we go moving on to report of the Southern California regional Occupational Center board representative and that is Suzanne Summer thank you I was able to go to the awards ceremony dinner for our sprock students it was a lovely evening and I want to make mention that from Peninsula Victoria Crawford received an award in fashion design Jordan and received an award in American Sign which fmtv we had Maria Aguilar elizares who was our forever last year she was a junior when she's on the board which I didn't realize so she got an award for administrative office assistant Montell Jordan work for automotive module and Nina Richardson got an award for clinical medical assisting & V students of all taken more than one class of Ciroc and that puts him in a pool of kids who can get Awards and they all about scholarships so fun evening and it was great to see our district had so many exciting kids win and yes I could tarnish you have to attend next year a thank you moving on to the facilities advisory committee report Matthew is that that's you right okay very proud of the committee that you picked they have been outside stats about small teams to visit every School site and within a matter of principals teachers and School site Council to find out what she have occurred since that the last master plan has done the came back great ideas what's up next for us we can consolidate those reports and then move on to prioritizing what Mesa District are from those reports but again Timber Ash and Howard medicine chairman and it is a excellent committee and I am very thankful for their work so they've gone I already just in that time and visited every School site so that's that's outstanding work that's why I think I mentioned last time is invaluable thank you moving on to public comment on non agenda items I do have two speakers if anyone else wants to speak please get a card into Miss Peck our first speaker is James made cleaning I just want to congratulate both negotiation teams on coming up with a currently this week tbsa but both teams worked really hard and came up with a very good sort of solution and agreements and stuff and it's enough to stressful process for those people involved in both teams that have two teachers that have to be out site of the classrooms and the district you know side of us is going to get out of their normal routine to get the notice of done so now it's it's nice to be able to this time of year and hopefully get through this stuff and sell the Wii focus on right now up until the end of the school year and then you know hopefully next year be able to focus on other stuff and stuff you know we're going through things nice excited both teams has really got stepped on and got it and work very well together in the very end and we're glad to be at this point right now voting on you know the possible agreement so it's one thing both teams publicly for that so thank you thank you and thank you for your leadership as well connect speaker is Tessa Barton getting bored I am speaking on behalf of mental health but it's all positive I'm very very excited that doctor Ramirez is going to be leading the way I feel that we're finally getting into the trenches and we're going to work forward we can only go forward because we gone anywhere with the exception of the couple will the wellness center at Palos Verdes and it's my understanding that Peninsula is also in the process of creating a Wellness Center emotional mental intellectual physical all four of those cans what are necessary and mrs. Ramirez and I were talking earlier today about her analogy about a bud flower Bud that will Bloom and I'm really really excited. Dr. Ramirez is going to be leading the way Garden in our garden will flourish I think our k212 kiddos are in good hands and I look forward to being one of the soldiers to help dr. Ramirez cave this past I think future looks very very bright but we have a heck of a lot of work to do and finally finally after 2 and 1/2 years of me coming up and talking about mental Wellness until health and the tragic talks about suicide and drugs and help I think we are on the right track and I applaud the board and I was skeptical when I heard about this mental health coordinator and when it came down when I learned that doctor Ramirez was the person you guys got this right I have a lot of Hope in this and she's compassionate she's passionate this is her core I'm really really looking forward to working with her and I think the community-at-large will be up on board as so thank you very much and have a great evening thank you okay moving on to discussion action items the first one is Doctor Butler thank you very much is the Silver Spur project correct last time I wanted to discuss a little bit for the lawn consequences of it so we have asked the shipment to Richardson to come forward to talk about the project in the fundraising itself and I'll try to help address a little bit of long-term issues well if it isn't enter Brandon internist at executive Ford and I'm here tonight to ask for permission to start raising funds for our shade at Silver Spur Elementary list of to shade structures 20 by 20 each and this is something that we have wanted to do for a while and we thought that this would be the right time to start looking into it tumult that's why we would like in case you're wondering this shape is to protect our students it would be they will be located by our lunch area and he will be to protect our students from winter time or it's and since we have a lack of space at Silver Star when it comes to the classroom you could also be used as an outside classroom as well I'm going to turn to the long-term no further. in a plan but just throwing out an idea that you could consider for the future much as you did with a technology tax if you would we were proven technology projects before that some money was raised in a dish and set aside that might be something to consider going forward you do some kind of addition to these longer-term projects that we will then set aside for deferred maintenance in down the caveat with that is it's unlikely you're going to put in the full replacement cost now for something that will be 10 yours in this case most likely that or longer for the church that we talked about at the last board meeting but that's one ideas to start setting aside a sinking fund if you will to replace some of these and have every project do that the other is that I've in Chuck Taylor work with I should say mister, big to look at both projects the church that we did last time in this is well it happen if you didn't replace them let's say it's some point it's not there are you building something now that can stay on its own so like with the turf we were comfortable that could River to turn or bark reasonable cost for that with this the installation the posts would be such that they could stay there if they did not have shade cloth and it wouldn't get in the way of anything because of the operating like that now and for the next 10 years so we're thinking about that in the design of how we go forward with these projects so outside of specific money being set aside for something in the future released try to do the best that we can that the facility can continue on even if the project itself is not there in the future I'm making to have any questions on this one for comment. three sixes for the shade and posie 18 or all the extra costs that go into a project such as the architect fee the DSA review and permit fees to them on a contingency just in case high school work and the site has the confidence if they can raise those funds I like the idea of some kind of a fund that we would collect money so over time we can replace the same thing that makes sense I think in this case it's a nice place that we would have where we would not have that now and that's not going to be in our budget chip to provide so I don't have an issue with it I think that in 10 years or how many of these things really do last longer than they're supposed to sometimes so I think this is an absolute need more than you know I want so I'm okay with it okay Tigris Suzanne and but by placing these we can refer in 10 years for the board of olive-harvey can revert with no no consequence we're not legally obligated to replace them from a district standpoint it would be up to the PTA to do Financial booster to finance it again you know they'll be able to tell a couple years out that hey these things are starting to fall apart so now I think this is a place I hope they last longer in the 50s I usually just to be consistent because we just to prove any of it to Keith about this we just approved for dapple grey to do a very similar project so I think as long as we're consistent to say the shade things are just putting poles and they're going to stay there it's like you're putting in enough swimming pools or something elementary schools where where there's going to be a maintenance cost to them I mean that's really the only thing going forward that is a concern as the things with maintenance and we all have sort of Trauma from having had that happened in the past but I don't think this project is really one of them and I know where this is on at campus so I totally get it as well as setting aside money I don't even know how you quantify that I think that would be really hard to do so maybe see how much they raised and then to see how that goes I I don't know but otherwise I think it's I think this is the process that we wanted to follow and I appreciate you after this process if no one has anything else I'll call for a motion anyone sure I wasn't sure what that meant by emotion then to prove the Seminary Federation planned for the Silver Spur Elementary School playground shade structure Phase 1 0 thank you Mara got the shade okay moving on this is the draft mou between the school district and our four cities for a school resource officer dr. turn is who is cuz I will kick it off president read so you happy for you and mo you and we would like to bring us to the board prior to approaching the cities with the intent of asking the are for cities to share 50% of the cost of two school resource officers and so we believe that the that the district putting forth half of the funds towards this and the city's putting forth half of the and is very active all way to go there's many cases were cities pay all of it we found somewhere it's a cautionary measure but the the fact is that it serves not just our students and our schools but it serves our commune and so we will be approaching the cities with the permission of the school board with with and I know you as such in the coming weeks anything. Dr. Butler if you look at the job description as well and we have kind of an enhanced job description we worked on even since the board and was prepared what we're trying to do is to take some of the best practices that have been learned another District so for example in Coronado we went through a lot of the Dirty Work of figuring out what are the different roles and responsibilities in that particular community and it sure is a lot of similarities with the PV Community as well so we feel comfortable that we're setting this up as good as we can today Ford and it will be a process an SRO on campus is never a turnkey situation where somebody shows up and they do the job it's very much about building relationships and dealing with issues as they come up and you have a team that has worked with before including a doctor who we are comfortable that we can move this forward if the board wishes okay let's just see if board members have questions on the mou or the process anything I Matthew what comes to mind for you I think it's it's a Josh way to approach this the share the cost because I stuck turns you stated members of our community as well as our students and as far as the the school resource officer and the job description against me it is it's going to be very critical that we make sure that we have enough candidates to interview to find those are going to be the best fit I know often times we enter in contract they will say we were sent to you 10 candidates or five candidates you must pick one of those I want to make sure that are cool to draw from this large enough that we can be confident that we have the best suit for a district okay thank you Suzanne I like that it's a three-year time frame so we're going to give it you know three years when you read about as a rose it makes sense that that we would have this additional level of safety different kind of Staffing. Jennifer students but we have to try it and see if it makes sense and if it works and we do have the complicated issue of having LA County Sheriff's cover one school and Phoebe States please cover the other and this actually is a nice hybrid solution that works for both schools which we haven't come up with so far so I appreciate you know that we work hard to figure out a way to make this work and hopefully our cities will support it and we'll see him see what happens okay I'm seeing how many questions are of comes on am I okay I'm driving to the great for you know drop item okay yeah that makes sense Megan for some reason they were to decline then play come back to the board to figure out how to pay for the whole thing that would be the decision I don't think we would just say no we would at least look at it and see if we could make it work but yeah that's a good or if they don't all for agree what would happen would have reason to know what okay so tomorrow morning I have to go to a meeting of the regional law enforcement committee where they going to Pepper me with many many questions on this topic that I probably won't be able to answer Olive so the training for these people are taken care of by who it is very specific training requirements that are laid out that take into account not just law enforcement work but also need to students okay by the high school at 2 high school principals so if they need to go to another school site for some that would still be at the direction of those people okay and then I guess there's they would also be evaluating them at some point I guess my concern is how do you who decides if they're good at something when it's not a skill set that school district please have we're going to take some time to train our high school principals in our middle school principals as well on a prep protocols inappropriate kind of uses for SRO dr. Horvath was a high school principal I'm he has experience with it as well so as do I and and and dr. Tyner actually work with an SRO in the last row also there there's a lot of people that have experience with this I'm so there but there will be some training it says it's a 12-month job did it need to be a 12-month job we're going to be flexible with that I think we were looking at potentially potentially 11 months we want the we want the hours to be flexible because there may be some cases where we actually want them at games at night and whatnot so so it totals up to a 12-month job but they might not be I need it in July potentially I think we'll be right now we're looking just at recruiting getting a good candidate for people who have tons of experience in her saying have you could sit I'm like maybe not but I'm going to be talking a lot of experience and I've worked on a lot of these protocols and trainings and have done the training is amazing love just from our own schools and some family so it's pretty interesting to see so we'll be learning on that side of his Ducks trying to said we have had experience and many of us have had experiences with sros but you know when I worked in Torrance we would they work through hard police carbon in La unified we had our own Police Department so different cell learning a little bit of the other side but we have tons of professionals who are willing to step up and help us understand fully fully what it's like to hire your own or else it's great and then the last thing I have is just I know the cities are not going to come back and ask for a justification as to why we need this now or why we need it at all so I have the dead and we all understand it about what other districts have and the and the Bear but his terms of hard data we don't have that to say that the police have been called more to our schools now than in the pasture or we had more issues that would benefit from this or how cuz that was the question that the assistant city manager wrote to us today about I would say a lot of its prevention right like we we get our building seismically upgraded right and so the questions well you haven't had the big one why are you spend neon on seismic retrofitting in preparation right so sros are privett in in in in very much a preventative measure in many cases and so it is hard to quantify the benefit of investing in preventive measures there will be some tangible measure the ENA working with kids obviously law enforcement drug enforcement but a lot of it is preventive and so I would just emphasize that with them it's a it's important presents at our schools as a preventative measure and no that's why a lot of school districts have gone that direction okay can you make sure to that I think for a lot of our students still see this as another opportunity for a potential career path to that you know it's a positive interaction it's positive relationship and Lionel how time does TT Pathways this is an opportunity for kids to understand what would be to be a police officer and I think that that is you know all of the enforcement agencies are always hiring so why would we want our students to consider that me it's important that we have in our Astros are there more bodyguards to our students and wardens are students to feel they are now in a prison we want them to feel protected and safe new one how to be able to engage in Iraq you know so that they can ship with law enforcement is this built upon and not diminished and so but you know prevention and then with that there's also the deterrence Factor you know it makes it no longer a soft target it makes it much more difficult Target and it will dissuade some from Bad Things okay I think that was anyone has any more questions on this girl said okay then I made sure we don't we're not voting on this one right this is just a direction item will come back and take a vote when it's a finalized once we get to your will give feedback cities on this but we will distribute this I know you would approach the cities now it looks like the job description right now this meeting is tomorrow morning so I don't know if that's possible to do it's not it's fine I know we sent them what we have now but if if you do have something that's substantially updated then I can take that to them at the crack of dawn tomorrow okay thank you moving on to P3 which is revisions to policies so Tutti this went up Matthew and I along with all the cabinet have been reviewing policies we did not bring them all back some some of the ones we reviewed and Jenna will always correct me if I'm wrong to everyone always leaves when we talk about politics so some of the that we talked about were our HR things that our attorney needs to look at some of them are just in negotiating things that we need to align a policy to wet our practices now so and then there was a cheating policy that I think dr. Rhonda Hanson teachers were going to take a look at so this is what we have are more there really nothing volts type things I can call attention to a couple of these for you when is just a sexual harassment policy that I think everyone read every year and the other one that was a little bit different was the athletic competition policy there was some new laws regarding heat exhaustion or what is that the right term heat-related illness tonight my shins and then a sudden cardiac arrest and a cardiac arrest and what happens on the road was a question what happens at home so that's all cleaned up and squared away to align with the law and our practice but if anyone has any questions or comments on any of these Edwin myself Matthew will start with you since you went through the mall in depth with me where did we end up on the so I checked with nurse Halle Berry and she said that she didn't believe that we needed to have defibrillators on the road because the law requires the school sites to also when we travel the stowaway schools also need to have them as well and because of the number of events that we have going on we have to purchase play like 40 of them and so she think that it would be cost-prohibitive for us to do that and not necessarily necessary for students correct correct ask again any questions on anything okay Megan okay the one question I had and it just something I wanted to think about going to future I was actually thinking about it this morning was the high school graduation requirements if we want to look at our district requirements maybe a line them even more strictly or have the staff look and see what that would look like for example of students had to take three years of math instead of 2 is that not simply not possible for certain students and it would be too limiting its at something I should be looking at right now or is ours are you know staff principles everybody happy with how it is right now is that doesn't make sense so just let me think about I'm going further otherwise everything goes back for a second reading we did have one item that 4158 that's listed in as an attachment but not called out down below since it's coming back for a second read I don't think it's a big issue but I just wanted everybody to know that one and I'm okay so that was it will just bring us all back as they are for approval at the next meeting okay movie onto report of board members Deep Rock yep I want you to start I over the last few weeks I love all the opportunities that when you get to the took see what our students are capable of and what the teachers are opted means they are creating for them I want to give a special thanks to Miss Lorraine loan or slime with pivot but she invited the board members and superintendent cherniss out on Sunday to take a look at the technology program that have over there which is run by volunteers we saw octopath where's that dropped little robotic cars we saw boats underwater Robotics and go karts and unmanned aerial vehicles it is like being a kid in a candy store and the other when you talk to them students me talk to them they're able to explain it this isn't adults who are saying yeah but that's who they're now the kids know what they're doing is so important and I'm so thankful for the volunteers that we have that are truly meant for him you know they're not directly in our students from entering our students and it was wonderful and I got to see a doctor trash his children and Doctor tires children and doctrines of children running around the robots and they're having a blast they're good drivers loved it what did the first annual Ridgecrest International Fair day and this was put on by their PTA and all the different we have parents I'm all over the world and so they would have liked the Taqueria 10th Street yellow history and then the students had a passport so you would actually go and get your passport stamped for all these different like in Epcot right and it was an excellent job music and I was very impressed and again how do you say impress more than any other words because I just am with everything that we do here what's the PG High School junior book awards and amazing and the Cornerstone poetry Cafe how it was I got to say was totally taken back by this year you walk into the fourth day crash classroom and there's lights and it's Stark and the kids are snapping right and it's like a little beatnik hats on and the Repo Man with a maid or they're being poems that they liked and I of course had to read Shel Silverstein's I'm sick which is all about I'm very sick I can't go to school but it's Saturday programs that are teachers in art Traders are praying for our students and it really is a blessing for our students and I think that I hope I didn't miss anybody I'm forgetting I'm so thankful for the opportunities that I to go out and see what a wonderful District we are paying back and see if he wants to go cuz I want to let you guys go to stuff now we don't have to go to everything we actually can if so it's always good I did get to 10 Vista Grande HSA which was awesome last in Friday I was happy to finish the Masters and governance President we gave me the cake for which is very kind of you I do have all the material of any of you want to read through any of that I have all the courses but I think we talked about maybe in the future going to like a CSV meeting and if you do get a lot of information that you wouldn't answer to get when the meetings are less scripted and you're just talked about all kinds of education issues and you just talk amongst yourself Daniel are alot about who cares about what and why you even want to work together so I think there's all those soft benefits to that kind of thing that we can work on together and I was able to go to the freedom for you and will fundraiser I saw you there you didn't mention that's always great and they do a great job providing opportunities for our kids to stay productive and busy and do the things in the world and screw organization I did also attend the Tibbett event I mean I guess it was last Sunday night was great I've been there before and you can see why kids want to come to school when they love what they're doing and they could spend 8 hours building something and it doesn't like they've been there even 15 minutes so those are always great day and then I'm looking forward to going to the main event this Saturday and earlier when I was listening to the students play for us and mrs. Strickland was my daughter's a flute teacher choose one of them and it spoke earlier what are the benefits are kids got that my children remind me all the time is that our kids the most part learn to read music in this District as a different language and it's an awesome opportunity and when we're in church at Mass and I'm with just my only son home now and I don't know the song and I don't sing it right his like Ed Sheeran music put all my kids can and they only did music Elementary School that if we don't really quantify we don't really talk about and they have that skill forever right so I'm happy that the main event is happening and raise lots of money the Apple keeps being able to support our kids to support music so that we have lots of ways for our kids to excel I thank you so much good point I will be going to some upcoming events as well I'll be going to to PTA Honore meetings next week as well as the PV High CSF banquet on Monday so that will be exciting that's really it for me for for meetings right now but still looking into sustainability and talking to teachers and our grading system works in SF Anthem technology and and really trying to learn about what the district's doing and how we can continue to improve their so I'm really excited about that also just a big shout out to all the teachers Happy Teacher Appreciation Day today in and week if you're celebrating the week that we really appreciate all that you do so just want to continue to honor those teachers and thank you for your service for you as well I hope if you're your students brought you many gifts I had a couple things for you guys first as I went to the Lunada Bay HSA lunch and I was really touched by a couple of the people honored because they are when is not apparent in the district 2 works on their Outdoors program and one is a former parents mr. Merlin and I just always touch to the people who continue to give back to our schools not just when their kids are there which is awesome too but just that whole perspective was very interest I always try to do new things and I went with my son to see this ComedySportz about night we didn't know what it was the kids were both high schools do this improv thing it was unbelievable it's all paid up it's hilarious the room was packed with kids from both high schools it was it was just a really really neat event to encourage if you see that next year not quite sure what it is go ahead and check it out it was really a lot of fun I also attended the pain High site Council meet and that was really interesting and I wanted to share with you both you all two things that students brought up that I thought were fascinating one was that because of the AP testing this week that some teachers were offering finals at the week of this suitcase it's a council meeting last week and that was anti-stress week and so one of the students ironically pointed out that antistress week was not a great week to be taking finals and she said it in a really non snarky way with Sprint and the other one was Fitness Clovis shared in detail about the fact that when kids sign up to take their AP test starting next year they're going to have to sign up in the fall instead of wait till the spring as kind of a money grab on the part of the College Board to get how to get your their money earlier but it creates a lot of issues for our high school staffs terms of leveling down and it's just kind of a mess that they'll work through it and get it organized but it was nice to see that they were really proactive about in trying to get the war about time everyone could start thinking about that and the only other issues I had just in terms of our parking lot issues if you have anything that we were going to talk about and we haven't please let me know the cheating thing was really the one thing I had that I thought we'd kind of put on the back burner and then the last thing was if you are going to email or call board members please tell us your name if you are writing to us anonymously we will not into what you're saying because we don't know who you are so please where we keep things confidential if you want to call or email any of us and say hey we really don't want anyone to know who we are we're all good with that and we've all done agree beside I don't see that changing Franny reason but when you write to us anonymously regardless of what you're saying there's absolutely nothing we can do and I personally not going to read it so please tell us who you are when we met with many many parents on a variety of topics all the time and always keep it confidential if we're asked oh that's about all I have for tonight thank you all for coming oh yes we do give us directions on how to come prepared cuz get my homework going I want to go to the doctors gotanda will send you a draft of the presentation which we have already be ready yet and also yes we are excited we left so it'll be a 330-333-3025 Toby an hour-and-a-half meeting everything we'd want to talk about so maybe if we look at the draft kind of think about what kind of like what we did it the other study session we might not get through everything so pick up really kind of what our main issues are things we want to provide Direction on to look into further thing I want to change right now that all those types of things also as a board we generally when we see data the first thing we do is we want to see more data about something that's related to the data that we have always been that way and I don't imagine that is going to change but that's okay that's part of the process of going to figuring out where we're at in the teachers there as well to help us will teachers principals in Hope many members one of the chairs and you just like our previous study session for people that saw that and I thought everyone spoke honestly and it was really a great exchange of information I think that can happen again just before we go wish safe travels back with mr. heater even though I ate all right thank you with that sorry thank you Keith we are adjourned at 7:50
