Transitional Kindergarten

PVPUSD offers a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) as an exciting educational option allowing children to further develop their social and emotional skills and be ready to actively engage in academics at the traditional kindergarten level. TK builds a bridge between preschool years and traditional kindergarten by offering a standards-aligned curriculum by credentialed PVPUSD teachers.

Transitional Kindergarten is a District program that does not adhere to school boundaries. There is a possibility for students to be placed at any school in the district, regardless of existing sibling attendance. While every attempt is made to place students at a school near their family residence, there is no guarantee this can happen. Students who attend a TK program at a school that is not their home school will be assigned to attend their home school for grades K-5.

Students are automatically admitted into Transitional Kindergarten if they turn five from September 2nd through December 2nd. Eligible students may enroll in TK by following the Enrollment process found here
Enrollment in the  PVPUSD Transitional Kindergarten for the 2021-22 school year is an option for:
  • Children who turn 5 years old on or between September 2 and December 2, each year. Students are automatically placed in Transitional Kindergarten at the time of enrollment and do not need TK Screening.

  • The PVPUSD is offering an Extended Transitional Kindergarten program for students who will turn 5 between December 3 and February 28 for the 2021-22 school year. See information regarding the Expanded TK Program below.

Universal Eligibility in TK

According to Assembly Bill 130, there will be universal eligibility for all 4-year-olds by 2025-26. PVPUSD will slowly begin to implement this by increasing the age of four-year-olds who can be admitted into TK each year beginning in the 2022-23 school year.

Expanded TK

2021-2022 School Year

PVPUSD is pleased to announce that we will be implementing an expanded TK program in 2021.

Starting in 2021, PVPUSD will begin offering students who have a birthday from December 3rd - February 28th the opportunity to join a TK classroom once they turn 5 years of age, pending space availability and that the child demonstrates a readiness to join the class.

If you are enrolling in the expanded TK program, it is recommended that you begin the enrollment process one month prior to your child turning five so that there can be time to assess your child and determine where space is available. Specific requests for sites will not be taken as it based on space availability. If your child does not demonstrate readiness for TK, he/she will wait until the following school year and can then enroll in Kindergarten.

2022-2023 School Year

Students can enroll in TK if they turn 5 between September 2nd and February 2nd

2023-2024 School Year

Students can enroll in TK if they turn 5 between September 2nd and April 2nd
