Committee Vision
PVPUSD believes that the beauty of our natural ecology, student wonderment, and wellness are deeply interconnected. We foster a culture of environmental awareness and action, empowering learners to thrive in equitable, healthy, and sustainable schoolyards while becoming global citizens committed to advancing sustainability in our community.
Committee Goals
The Sustainability and Wellness Committee is responsible for the development, implementation and review of the Student Wellness Policy and sustainability efforts. They will explore the progress that PVPUSD is making towards achieving the three goals below:
  1. Connectivity, Wellness & Community – PVPUSD schools serve as a community space for collaboration and connection; offering students, families, and neighbors a healthy place to congregate, connect and to gather.
    • School gardens serve as discovery centers and experiential classrooms for students and parent-volunteers to commune and engage
    • Outdoor learning spaces to create opportunities for students to be outside engaging in hands-on learning, further creating connection to our environment and local ecology
    • School grounds serve to strengthen community engagement and are designed to increase access and opportunity for healthy outdoor physical and social engagement while increasing park space for the neighborhood
    • Outdoor learning and increased interaction with nature has physiological benefits and lifelong impact
  2. Environmental Literacy – PVPUSD empowers students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to make informed, responsible decisions that enhance the well-being of natural systems, communities, and future generations by integrating these principles throughout NGSS-aligned curriculum and leveraging the rich coastal environment in which we live to be both motivator and 21st century science lab.
    • Partners like the PVP Land Conservancy, AltaSea, Surfrider Foundation and numerous others offer our students extended learning to further develop and connect to our school grounds making school sites themselves often the source of the project
  3. Culture of Sustainability – PVPUSD creates systems that embed the desired culture within facilities and operations prioritizing and placing value upon social equity, accountability and continuance in all programming and systems while honoring the rich geographic and historical context of the ancestorial land of the Tongva Nation upon which we reside.
    • Include sustainability within district master-plan
    • Create opportunities for collaboration between Wellness, Budget, Sustainability, and Bond committees
    • Increase signage for school gardens and open spaces of the native species and historical sites on campus to create connectivity within academics and appreciation for our ecology on campus
    • Train Facilities & Maintenance on sustainable practices and policies'
    • Create systems for all school sites to ensure sustainable practices and green policies are met
