so excited to turn it over to two awesome student take it away to USD state of the district and I'm the TV which a student board member of the student board member from Peninsula High School there's so many opportunities for students in our district I've been able to find my voice in pursuing programs like model un and mock trial here to share some of their passions that they've been able to pursue their own district is DHS Department performing a number for their homecoming music Chicago yay Keystone mystery I hope you'll enjoy that as much as I did another round of applause everyone in our community performances athletic competitions and school events I guarantee you will be impressed by our classmates and the students at every school it is incredible to see such the performers in Iran Community artistic provide so many awesome opportunities because of our supportive Community all of you now let's take a look at our district and all of the amazing things to support us as growing and learning student pvhs what's with all of our videos for tonight of our students using they're spectacular skills to influence daily life in our district what district is incredible and now to share with us all the amazing things going on in PA TUSD I would like to introduce our superintendent of schools dr. Alex ternes for tonight and she she gave me a choice to be good so you shall try not to act too smart to wait or to just be yourself the truth is we we want to be can I use our sponsors the Chamber of Irene have thank you for everything you've done in 10 minutes City Council in administration from Rolling Hills Estates thank you for hosting this event as well this is what I was supposed to be an annual event for after it's been so much work maybe buying annual but 9 months is what we will figure it out so I want to talk briefly about what PF does for our school is because it really is incredible can you get into a little bit about finding a Power Finance in in a little bit but what PS does for our schools in raising three million dollars a year allows us to have so many of the programs we have up here from the p into the music to the library to the stem to counselors we are truly exceptional because of PF and when I when I say t f i mean people here and so thank you give yourself a hand for supporting Kiev please continue to support PDF thank you of our families donate Sofia and I think everybody should be giving it contributing something if we can only achieve greater and greater successes so when I prepare speeches on remind I used to teach 6th grade subject world history there was a student of covering ancient Greece a research report on ancient Greece and I'll never forget Claire She Wrote Socrates was a wise man he was a Greek philosopher who walked around giving advice to people timer to me tonight I will try a lot of things about school district in the school district for 430 forty years or you're new to the district you can take away something interesting play artist Rick truly truly exceptional and one of those things are sponsors sponsors organizations I didn't just put USC up here cuz I'm an old there is a reason do we have great Partners in our community that support our community and we support our kids 16 School, schools 10 elementary schools three Middle School to high school to preschools one continuation school and and we are a unified school district and so that's something that it's important for me to Highway so why talk about our accomplishments what's the point it's not to beat our chests and say we're we're so great but as an organization it's critically important to be able to celebrate you are and that's how we measure Providence we will the saying well we'll get there we'll get there we're never going to get there there's always going to be challenges there is no there we need to be able to stop recognize how we see how we succeeded where we need to improve until there's there's a lot of recent successes like to talk about first Mother's a different feel in our schools safer more professional we have school resource officers in each high school we have uniform and the employees we have a new visitor management system called Raptor soap so parents are for tracking who is on our campus we have better communication drowning video cameras to our schools we are upgrading our technology we're replacing phone systems with voice over I am so we can talk. is calling our schools know we had a call to our high school that result in us having a lockdown the high school last year and we couldn't wrap you need to call we can do that today we couldn't do that last year more interesting text tip line text text things, and we're continuing to practice the see something say something so safe and security is absolute priority is a priority of our Board of Education to priority of our staff and it's something that that I'm personally very proud as we continue to try to get better at it it's against we're never going to be there when it comes to safety and charity but we can always try to improve and that's what we're doing in our school district in addition intervention in the school day it's it's it's critically important last year we began to look at data and what we found was about four of our kids or not raid level math and English quite a bit of time working with kids be served for free before and after school and end in son during the school day over 600 students district teachers work with our kids giving them extra sub organizing English and that's critically important however what we found was we can reach more kids if we can figure out how to do it during the school day until we're looking at that it's a priority of Oz what are models that are middle schools that have tutorial. We're students will self-select what class they want to go to to get the support they eat that's a weird looking at model ways to get intervention support in the school that why will lot of our kids are doing a million things after school over 50% of our kids at the high school are in some kind of after-school program so to have them comfort for masa for an English Sports we can figure out how to do to the school day since then our students will really benefit our recent College acceptance continues to be extremely straw over 65% of our applicants are we in UC schools we have kids doing amazing colleges universities in community colleges throughout the country find list of any South Bay School District Shih Tzus scored in the top 1% of all Junior Station wife deporre we continue to celebrate and emphasize for a set of academics Athletics activities there's a million things we could be here all night if I name them all ocean and some incredible Year Awards newspaper Awards speech and debate Academic Decathlon or suits continue to ring the top and that's something we can all be very Jerry Crowder programs connect over 40 students as I've mentioned in our clothes for a wide array of opportunities to talk about success ticket or square at the sizing program on positive behavior intervention support starting to give kids positive encouragement in hidden in a in a reward program and so our principles have diplomatic TV is power schools and it's extremely well yes thank you. Everywhere we have incredible Technologies at The Cutting Edge of technology and that's critically important to the success of our kids systems the rank is the number one school district in the South Bay schools a plus rating fiscal responsibility that's critically important for us as our district for the first time in a long time we settled multi-year contract multi-year calendars with our employee Marketing in it what part of it is part of the reason we've we settled on a calendar the wave and I want you all to respond to I can get feedback for it for tonight. where to read in which we really want to hear from you and get back to you you're going to have some questions I'm sure either tonight or tomorrow or the next day so please take the time to do that to reduce cough when we cut our costs navigate to Surf last week yes we improve our class sizes district-wide we do have long-term physical challenges in a minute presentation cost failing infrastructure these things are challenges that we're going to continue to have to address strong organizations from within we have developed inspiring leaders Institute under the direction of ours open superintendent. We're over 2025r teachers are volunteering their time to be part of the training programs in NC gravel super and not let them leave our district and go be a principal somewheres in the approval of our board we have a cell phone work policy Learning Center teachers teaching and kids are in class the state of the district is clearly strong the present is exciting the future is even more side and you're going to hear about that tonight we do have some tangible Roblox which I'm going to get into now the first is finding and so when we talked about that pvpusd so your field trip or one of the lowest planning school districts in the state of California goes towards funny goats towards School District with students that meet specific criteria and we don't have those kids and it's mostly socio-economic but are we are we are low in California by almost $4,000 and by the way we would be $5,000 less per student if it wasn't for PTA if he yeah but if you look at me and you will see that we are far behind others show so I teach School Finance at USC in and one of the exercises I do with my students is a hot know what what happened what's happening in New York where is all this money going if they're allocating twice as much money to their school any answer is lower class sizes more programs smaller schools in New York you'll see you'll see us. You'll see 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 you'll see. A ton of different programs and so this is something we need to all be aware of his advocate for funding for the State of California for Palos Verdes because this is not this is not acceptable for us and we continue to have to raise money to provide an adequate education and then we're doing that and we're going to be on we're going The Next Step we're providing an exceptional education and it's because of people like you the people were saying we can we may not get the funds from Calif from California so we're going to raise herself we're going to volunteer we're going to have parents come to our schools we're going to have experts come in a variety of areas and and make our schools. we're also asking the same parents the same people over and over and over and that's hard to do so it's important to recognize the reality of school Friday and to understand that what we're getting into house races just not believe it or not we have facility issues our campuses all of them were built between 1957 and 1964 so they're all about 60 years old imagine living in the house 60 years old tomorrow you need to upgrade your plumbing bathroom and put a new roof on how much would that cost you at least $100,000 right schools on top of that school construction cost 30% more than private commercial construction and not because of regulations that the school's meet safer so there's a Department of State architect has specific requirements and then there's prevailing wage for the people that we hire to do the work so we have for example we have as you can see some of our priority over 200 bathrooms in the school district they need to be need the map of our repairs are absolutely substantial Daily Times failing Tower seismic issues we would love to spend $400 a week we wanted to go to teachers supplies I want to go to repairing our facilities this year so far $50,000 has been moved to the TV is MPV High the first day of school you to shut down the water TV is until our amazing plumbers came to do the repairs and so let me talk briefly about it so he can see here so we have a facility advisory committee and developed our facility priorities hpac that's a big one with some of our schools as well. What time advisory committee and we put together our top priorities Sy to facility communities and a site for play committees we left by our principles and we have until the school orders going to get this this broke from the facility visor committee on all the things we need to repair and so so how do we do that how we do not have as a school district options that's one option you can fundraise which is very hard to do for bathrooms I will tell you something to raise money for his 20 or sewage pipes can the magnitude of this is such that the districts typically go out to the community for the four right here is going to have to make that if and when we try to find these repairs money for repairs it must be on a specific it has been a general election so there's three March 2020 November 2020 November 2022 two years and if the board would decide to do something did it would require a 55% vote until more on next Thursday and looking at the needs and determining its and when and how to fund fundies shut up in spite of these Roblox we continue to achieve at high levels and here's an example of how we danced around each other's please Burrito Company I love watching your fellow students pursue their passion for dancing I also love performing with my selfie National coating and school from technology to be successful in the world is changing education is changing and now please walk them. They're turn us back to tell us that our students jobs tomorrow using technologies that have not been invented jobs that don't exist today solving problems that we don't know exist yet is a reality it's something we must paracord everyday in every classroom many be sitting here today or in jobs that won't exist in 10 20 30 years and this is why education is so powerful and it's so important for what we do teaching is the most important profession in our society let me give you an example. Look very happy by the way how so we're going to move on from from the past to the Future which did not exist 10 years ago search Optimizer tell Madison social media not exist 10 years ago so where will our students what will they be doing it's our job in education to not just teach what's in the box to not just teach the curriculum but to teach students how to think to teach doing communicate this is going to prepare them for the future much more set of then how to do long division and stress descale Project Oxygen 713 Google did a study on the top 8 skills the top eight characteristics the best employees in the organization Stickman Stella's last first was being a good coach and second was being a good communicator the National Association of colleges and Employers in 2016 dirt needed to study on this and candies and their results were that communication skills sought-after quality what was the highest quality among job recruiters soft skills were more important hard skills critical thinking problem saw how to communicate how to make eye contact about how the future of our kids the skills that we send them off to college to be successful that's most important thing some of the most successful students that wreck right now are some of the people flying to the MIT and the Caltech turkey didn't because not only are they they have the AP calc and in the physics but there are the champions speech and debate team person right so they can communicate some of the future programs in our school district and I don't need going to why I want to talk about we doing we're trying to develop a a student seminar course that will be a graduation requirement at our high school where kids are getting curriculum health education curriculum now health class is Winnebago Minnie High School many years ago and acquitted but our kids need mental health education drugs and alcohol education location of cultural sensitivity they need healthy coping skills good decision-making so what are you a teacher's administrators Community experts in the field of health and work in a program that we believe this is a priority for our kids this will be a graduation requirement for Instagram, how are kids programs because our kids desperately needs the development of the TV TUSD Marine Science Center Center in the program that our students are the experts understanding the unique marine environment for which they live here on the peninsula pvpusd Hands-On aquaculture experiments utilizing Foley equipment last housing marine animals and working with professional researchers as you are aware world of signs to be effective it must be Hands-On and so we are going to create a unique experience for kids get between students here in our district and researchers and professors at the University level we're going to study ocean sustainability we're going to study the impacts of the areas with which we live and so we're very excited to announce recently received from the Provost office from University of Southern California fight on we will see the flowers drink to our district and design in developing the center was authored by dr. William Leach of Cresskill public policy who is a carrot and he's here tonight somewhere. who authored by USC professors from from dornsife College of Sciences Google, public policy roster School of Education the USC School of Architecture along with Harvest from the Natural History Museum of Sherri Kramer in in Continental development we received a grant from Richard Melanie Melanie Lundquist from Continental Development Corporation to assist us in designing the Frog so thank you very much. I need to talk about 21st Century Learning we don't want to be a word that gets thrown around and no one knows what it means there's there's a lot of education so what is 21st Century Learning particular you see this in a lot of our elementary schools now we're trying to to meet Indonesian students that that have different different kids to learn differently it's a 21st Century Learning is Meeting those needs its teaching differently for kids building house hospice organized flexibility and how technology is used in flexibility and housebreaking with an access so so you can see that more and more than hear about it that's what it's about if we ever get to the point in the school district of a we can actually feel flexible 21st Century Learning classrooms you'll have to move furniture you'll have to acknowledge you can have all the places you can have modular so we're getting there in school staff which resultant students nowadays dual citizenship another word you need to know digital citizenship is important to help students learn how to communicate and collaborate safely and responsibly online being a digital citizen includes report preventing cyber bullying which is critically important schools in you hear about it over and over and over suicide from cyberbullying in another state and we need to teach our kids what that is and how to handle it email etiquette a variety of things a digital citizenship I'm also helping students put their finger on the pulse of new technologies into our educational program so I can 500 / 500 students the state of California used to used to give a specific funding for these kids and they don't anymore but we still have the special needs horse while it's no longer there we need to figure out play the need to recognize that Learners access information differently and reach out to them with me to meet them where they are by challenging curriculum and programs for them so with that we have a group of our gate teacher representatives from every site and we're trying to put together a program that is going to be unique and special and really challenged and engaged our date students because we don't want them to fall behind it so it's not like it's a specific type of Steel do we need to meet their needs finally I'm really sad about this are our district currently have a TTI program for transition to Independence these students are provided instructions Pacific job Readiness skills and focus on Recreation and Leisure and Vocational exploration they deserve the best jobs in the community providing jobs here in our school district so they are very own pvpusd ttw transition to work program with careers in our district working in a variety of areas such as Food Services printshop Eminem instructional aides rttw program will provide career paths for the students who have been kicking for the last 20 years student employed in our schools isn't just good for them it's good for all of our students it's good for our school district it's important for our kids to see that people are watching Mickey you should be celebrated and so we are very excited about our ttw program in our school this is really awkward are we really should be 100% of our kids are connected and that is our responsibility of the school district in the connections to something or someone positive the big something inspired it makes it makes them feel like they have a purpose it begins Elementary School with experience is it could be thin in the program it could be off our car program it could be real Sports Core curriculum high school student to explore something that helps them grow and find a fur vest before they leave High School school project more likely to engage in high school research has shown that young people connected to their schools are less likely to in many risky behaviors including sexual initiation Alcohol Tobacco and drug use in violence next to their schools are also more likely to have better achievement higher grades better attendance and they stay in school longer for a risk increased elevated so whose responsibility is it how did it get here cuz we're not here right now it's all it's all of our responsibility Educators disengagement as parents best way to encourage engagement and for all of us it's our responsibility to identify this engagement and then when you identify these kids I want you to reach out to people in our Peanut gang and let them know because it is well and this is this is our goal as a school district I want to thank you for allowing me to serve as your superintendent Katie TUSD has a legacy of excellence and we will continue to prepare our students to thrive today and tomorrow in closing I want to a special thanks to director of the evening dr.
