Return to School Timeline for K-12 Hybrid Programs: Elementary, Middle, and High School
Dear PVPUSD Parents and Community Members,
In light of the recent decline in COVID positive rates, the Los Angeles Department of Public Health (DPH) has allowed for all grades K-6 to return to school while in the Purple Tier (COVID case rates < 25 per 100K). The DPH has also indicated that this decline in COVID positivity rates, if ongoing, could lead to our county’s entry into the less restrictive Red Tier very soon (COVID case rates < 7 cases per 100K). As such, return to school dates for grades K-5 have already been announced and we are preparing our sites and facilities. Today, we are announcing our Hybrid Program return date for 6th grade and our targeted return date for grades 7-12.
6th Grade: March 15th
As we are currently in the Purple Tier, Hybrid 6th grade students will have the opportunity to come to school for a portion of the week beginning on Monday, March 15th. Unfortunately, the 6th grade return to school safety protocols from LA County are intended for elementary schools. As such, while in the current Purple Tier, students must stay in stable cohorts (1 group of students all day) and are not permitted to travel from class to class or intermix with other students.
Despite these scheduling challenges, we are currently working to facilitate a return to school experience for our Hybrid 6th grade students while adhering to these single group requirements. A schedule will be shared with 6th grade hybrid students and families in the coming weeks.
Once all intermediate grade levels are permitted to reopen (Red Tier), 6th grade students will have the opportunity to attend school more regularly.
7-12th Grade: April 12th
Per State Required Red Tier - Predicated on LA County moving from Purple Tier (COVID Case Rate < 25 cases per 100K) to the Red Tier (COVID Case Rate < 7 cases per 100K).
We are excited to announce a targeted return to school date for our intermediate schools and high schools. Provided that LA County enters the Red Tier under the current state guidelines by Monday, April 12th, PVPUSD will target a return to in-person instruction for our intermediate and high school hybrid students. The schedules for these programs will be predicated on the requirements set forth by DPH and may change from the current hybrid schedule. The target date of April 12th could change depending on when our district is permitted to reopen intermediate and high schools.
If we are unable to return in the current Hybrid Program, priority groups of students and grades will be considered for returning to campus in a smaller scale or capacity.
Today marks another important milestone for our district. I want you to know that we are doing everything we can to support all students during this pandemic. With the continued decline in COVID positivity rates, coupled with the increased availability of vaccines, the spring looks more promising for all our students, parents and staff.
It’s an honor to serve this community as your superintendent of schools.
Alex Cherniss, Ed.D.
