for the second quarter were focusing Our Community Education on social emotional health growing up isn't easy and it comes with a lot of pressures Studies have shown that 17% of students from the ages 6 to 17 suffer from mental illnesses. anxiety and depression each year being there for your child is one of the most important things you can do counselors teachers administrators nurses we have two full-time student support specialist at each of our high schools and that are intermediate school and are continuation school Rancho Del Mar they provide Robin support April individual therapy group therapy through assemblies and grade level presentations where we talked about suicide prevention depression stress a lot of times the students are always worried about a friend and that's how we initially find out about it so it's important to not only know the warning signs for themselves but also their friends and learning how to kind of take care of each other the biggest thing I would say is just a shift in Behavior so whatever was normal for your student if suddenly you know they're not sleeping any hours of the night there super irritable they start to lose motivation they don't want to hang out with friends anymore they aren't motivated to do just a lot of interest in a lot of things even sometimes their hygiene they're isolating that's not real healthy they might start using drugs or alcohol they might be more they might start acting out that is kind of signs it's usually a sign that some things off and that would be assigned to check on them and get them some support and help them at home we talked a lot about coping skills everything from baking cookies or taking a walk with their own child it's really important that parents are having to have conversations with their students talking about how they're feeling being in tune with the having family dinners knowing their circle of friends for parents to be able to recognize winter time set this is kind of typical teenager Behavior versus maybe when do you need to reach out to the hub the first one is to pick your battles with your kids so you want to be talking to your kids more than just lecturing them all the time and there was a lot of I always think they can fix team so you want your kids to be healthy happy well-adjusted kids so you don't want to be nagging them at every little thing on Instagram all the time you're not at the dinner table your room's a mess you got to pick your battles because you want to save them for the big lessons they come home they maybe they've been drinking maybe they were driven by a friend that was if you want them to pay attention to that lesson number to what I talked about it's talk to your kids so no your kids and talking your kid isn't lecturing her kids it's kind of like bonding talking about maybe sharing what you went through as a kid always asking how was your day what's going on talk about the struggles he went through we were teenagers not that long ago that's really important to share kind of we were normal kids to we get in let your talk to you and be heard normalize their experience what they're going through validated it's real and don't minimize it because it's to them it's a really big thing what is a great resource we have is a part a shape with a company called South Bay families connected so we have a TV families connected webpage and website families have access to information regarding a variety of social. mental health issues and they're just a wealth of curated articles videos and all kinds of information for our parents who might have some kind of need for their students be able to access some additional information on how to support coming from a high school student who experiences the ups and downs of growing up each day it helps a lot to know there are resources not only for myself but for my parents as well Isabella from on Eli from
