Show Transcript
I'm sure the report of the superintendent is very first reported better be a good one Dr. Cherniss thank you president Reid members of the school board since joining the school district I've been asked many many questions questions from parents Teachers Community member students two of them have two questions really stuck in my mind so I wanted to dress them tonight the first one relates to the fact that I will be at the school sites every Friday and to me this is really important it's important to be to be at the school to see what's going on in the classrooms and to get to know the culture of the school district and there's only one way to do that and that's. be there so I look forward to that this Friday I'll actually begin by going to Rancho Vista Ridgecrest Cornerstone in dapplegray so this question was will you be eating the cafeteria food on your Friday visits and so the answer is absolutely yes if the food's good enough for our students it's good enough for our superintendent in our staff so and I think Friday's or preppy today right sometimes Mondays I will work on it okay so are the second question I received several times people wanted to know do you have a vision for the school district in saveri good question the short answer is not yet I do not have a vision yet for the school district and over the next step months I'll be listening learning and leading I'll be listening to our students to better understand what motivates them I will want to see what they how they perform is Learners and how are teachers I want to meet with our teachers and our counselors and I want to hear from them to see what their strengths are in and what their challenges are in the school district are we providing our students with the best possible opportunity to go to the colleges and universities of their choice I'll be speaking to our custodians I'll be speaking to our groundskeepers and I want to know do they have a tools that they need to make our schools presentable clean and provide the optimal learning environments for our students I'll be listening to our office managers are student support staff to understand what drives them and what challenges they face and what we can do to support them all spend time with our site administrators and I've already done that quite a bit or District management team to hear their perspectives in to develop a plan to support them I'll be a PT and Foundation waiting to hear from our constituents and understand what our parents value and how we can support their children I'll be at community events and Civic meetings with city managers with council members and finally I'll be listening quite a bit to the school board to understand what the board's goals are and objectives and try to support them and while being a listener I will also be learner I will be learning about our current curriculum and our future curricular needs I will learn about our academic achievements and are instructional goals and what are gaps are I'll learn about our school facilities master plan and evaluate our current and future facility needs I will a SSR Safety and Security needs at each of our school sites and I'll also be assessing our technology infrastructure and our education technology K12 as you can see there's a lot for me to learn and of course from today and everyday moving forward I will lead this District to the best of my ability I believe in leading by example and I believe it actions do speak louder than words I believe that trust and confidence in leader is earned overtime and it's based on one's production not ones predictions and finally I believe in accountability and to that end I will be producing a report for the Board of Education which highlights my findings and has recommendations in it for the future I may not have a vision yet for the school district but I do have expectations and I want to make that clear tonight to the school board into the community first and foremost I expect that all students should be physically and emotionally safe at school I also expect that all of our students are to be proficient and advanced in English language arts and Mathematics currently we are below 75% of our students that are proficient and advanced in ela and Mathematics all of our students to have opportunities for high quality academic and extracurricular enrichment I expect our district to be leaders in education technology computer science and stem I expect our district to be at the Forefront of innovation through the establishment of Community Partnerships and Joint projects I expect our teachers to be the best trained and Beth supported teaching Workforce in the state of California and finally I expect the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District to be the number one school district in the state of California using multiple measures now this won't happen overnight and it will take us time and energy and I'll be missteps and failures along the way but I have no doubt with all the talent in this community that I've already witnessed with all of our resources within this District we will achieve extraordinary things and we will meet the highest of expectations and that concludes my report
