Independent Study P.E.

Independent Study Physical Education (ISPE) is an optional alternative instruction strategy for intermediate and high school students who are elite athletes competing in highly competitive sports. Students work independently adhering to a written agreement under the general supervision of a credentialed physical education teacher and in accordance to the District’s Board Policy and Administrative Regulation 6158.
The out-of-school activity being proposed for ISPE must:
- Be instructed under the direct supervision of a credentialed or otherwise qualified coach who is at least twenty-one years of age;
- Consist of instruction that includes a minimum of ten (10) hours a week, Monday-Friday, in the student’s competitive sport;
- Incorporate research and learning in the District health standards;
- Incorporate the P.E. Model Content Standards mandated by the state and District;
- Include a student journal (Time Activity Log) documenting progress in the content standards as explained by the general supervising P.E. teacher.
2025-26 Application Process
Beginning for the 2025-26 school year, PVPUSD will utilize the InformedK12 platform to process applications for ISPE.
- The 25-26 application consists of two parts:
- Part 1 completed by the parent/guardian
- Part 2 completed by the coach of record.
- Hard-copy/paper applications will NOT be considered.
- Applications completed by a student under 18 years of age and/or by the parent/guardian on behalf of the coach will be denied and a new application will be required.
Application Instructions/Documents
Please read the requirements carefully to verify that you have all necessary documents completed prior to beginning your application. All items below must be included in the submitted application:
Part 1: Parent/Guardian or Student Over 18 (Parent/Guardian IK12 Guide)
- Student Information including school & grade for 2025-26
- Parent Contact Information
- ISPE Sport/Program Information including description of activities, student's accomplishments in the sport, and the student's goals for the year.
- Statement of Understanding & Acknowledgement and Release
Part 2: Coach of Record (Coach/Outside Provider IK12 Guide)
- Coach Information
- Coach/instructor’s qualifications/credentials
- Coach/instructor’s First Aid Certification
- Coach/instructor's CPR Certification (if separate from First Aid certification)
- Coach/instructor’s Proof of Age (must be over 21 years old, must submit government or other official document showing birth year)
- Coach/instructor's Mandated Reporter Training Certification (must be AB 1432 compliant)
- ISPE Program information including training/practice calendar with times and activity and description of how program meets State Model Content Standards
- Coach/instructor certification and Hold Harmless, Indemnity & Insurance Agreement

ISPE at the Intermediate School level is a full-year program only.
High School ISPE is quarter-based and students may complete the application at each quarter as applicable or may apply multiple quarters at one time. Click the applicable quarter(s) in the application. If ISPE will not start until 2nd, 3rd or 4th quarter, you may apply at that time.
