Alternative Instruction
PVPUSD recognizes that there might be times when students require alternative instruction options.
Please contact your site principal (elementary) or counselor (secondary) to discuss your student's specific situation.
Independent Study
Independent Study (IS) may be granted to students who demonstrates motivation, commitment, organizational skills, and academic skills to work independently. For elementary students, the Principal may consider the parent/guardian’s level of commitment to assist the student. IS requests will be denied for students who have previous incomplete contracts.
Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) may be available to students for up to 15 cumulative days in the school year for emergencies, diagnosed illness, or unavoidable travel. Please contact your site administrator as soon as possible; contracts may not be given retroactively.
Long-Term Independent Study (LTIS) may be available to students for who will be out of school for 16 days or more or for shorter leaves if 15 days of short-term have already been exhausted in the school year for emergencies, diagnosed illness, or unavoidable travel. PVPUSD will only approve initial LTIS contracts for up to 25 days. In addition to the work assigned by the classroom teacher(s), students on LTIS are required to meet with an independent study supervising teacher via email/TEAMS/ZOOM/phone (daily for TK-8 students, weekly for 9-12). Please contact your site administrator (elementary) or school counselor (secondary) as soon as possible; LTIS contracts take 5-10 school days to process and must be fully signed prior to the start of the contract.
Palos Verdes Distance Learning Academy (PVDLA)
For students who need more flexibility in their schedule, PVDLA is a remote-learning option for students in 6-12 grade. PVDLA offers classes through Course-Based Long-Term Independent contracts with all classes occuring online. Please visit https://pvdla.pvpusd.net/ for more information.
Out-of-District Courses (9-12 Grades)
Per Board Policy and Administrative Regulation 6146.11, PVPUSD high school students may fulfill graduation requirements through alternative means.
Any outside course fulfilling graduation requirements that will be posted on the student’s PVPUSD transcript must be pre-approved by the high school. Students may take up to 8 semesters (equivalent to 4 year-long classes) outside of PVPUSD, with no more than 4 semesters/2 years per academic discipline; in Mathematics, the maximum allowed is 2 semesters/1 year. Requests will not be granted for Language Arts or Algebra 1. Those must be taken through PVPUSD.
Please contact your school counselor for more information.
